A Guide to Chimney Lining

Do I need to line my chimney?

If your chimney is in good order with no leaks i.e. no leaks of smoke into your upstairs rooms, your attic or your neighbours` house, in the case of a semi, then the answer is NO you do not need to line your chimney nor is there anything in Building Regulations which states that you must line. The rule here is NO LEAK NO LINER.

When must I line my chimney?

You must line your chimney if it is defective and leaks smoke into your house, attic or your neighbours` house.

I have a lining in my chimney that was used for gas, can I use if for my woodburner?

A gas liner is not made from a metal strong enough to cope with the heat from wood burning stoves and multi fuel stoves and will start to disintegrate releasing noxious fumes. You will only need to replace this gas liner with a liner suitable for Wood burning Stoves or Multi Fuel Stoves if your chimney is leaking. It may be that you will find your brick chimney is in good order however, if you find your chimney leaks we can supply a full lining kit.

I have no chimney, can I install a woodburning stove or multifuel stove?

The answer to this is YES! But you may have to apply for planning permission either in advance or retrospectively.
